What to Do in Ljubljana: A Complete Guide

Ljubljana is Slovenia’s capital, and it’s an easy city to explore. It’s compact and walkable, with riverside cafés and plenty of historic sights. Below, you’ll find the top things to do in town, plus tips to help you make the most of your visit.

If you’re deciding how long to stay in Slovenia or where else to go, check out our road trip itinerary for a full overview.

Ljubljana Castle

The Ljubljana Castle sits on a hill within view of most of the city. Visiting the castle grounds is free, but tickets are required for the viewing tower, viewing the penitentiary, the Museum of Puppetry, and other exhibits. Because it’s a medieval fortress, not all areas are wheelchair accessible, though special guided tours are available.

The most popular way to reach the castle is by the funicular railway, which requires a ticket. These tickets do sell out, so purchase them in advance if you’d rather not make the 20-minute walk uphill to the castle.

Central Market

This is an indoor-outdoor market with artisan crafts and local food stalls. It’s usually closed on Sundays and most active in the warmer months, though we still saw plenty of vendors during our mid-October visit. In particular, we loved the booths with handmade pottery and local farmers selling cups of berries to go. During the holiday season, the space transforms into a large Christmas market.

Boat rides

A boat ride on the Ljubljanica River is a relaxing way to see the city from a different angle. You’ll glide past bridges, cafés, and some of Ljubljana’s prettiest architecture. Several companies offer daytime, sunset, and even dining cruises.

Riverside bars and cafes

Cafes and restaurants line the Ljubljanica River. Cozy outdoor seating is abundant, and it’s the best place to slow down, enjoy a drink, and watch people pass by.

Museums

There are so many great museums in Ljublana to choose from. We were most interested in the Museum of Contemporary Art (MSUM) and House of Illusions, although there are history museums, a National University Library, and more. Find an entire list of museum options here

Metelkova Art Center

The Metelkova Art Center is about a 20 minute walk from downtown. It’s an alternative cultural zone built in former army barracks. We thought it had a similar feel as the Wynwood Walls in Miami. Thanks to our jet lag, we visited early in the morning and had the area to ourselves.

Plečnik House

The Plečnik House is the former home and studio of Jože Plečnik, Slovenia’s most influential architect. Located in the Trnovo district, it offers a look into his life, work, and design process through preserved rooms and personal belongings.

Guided tours take you through the house and garden, where many of his ideas for Ljubljana were developed. It’s a quick, worthwhile stop for anyone interested in architecture or Slovenian history.

Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park is an impressive 20 acres – it’s Ljubljana’s largest green space. It’s about a 20 minute walk from the city center, and you’ll love the wide walking paths (designed by Plečnik!), shaded gardens and quiet ponds here. Plus, it’s home to the Tivoli Mansion.

Walk Old Town

Join one of the many free walking tours, or explore Old Town yourself. Start by heading to the Prešernov trg – a circular pedestrian hub, where you’ll see the Dragon and triple bridges, as well as the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. We enjoyed walking along the riverfront, but pick any street and you’ll discover something beautiful.

Chocolarium Ljubljana

The Chocolarium is a fun, interactive chocolate museum. You’ll learn how cocoa beans become chocolate, sample treats directly from a chocolate fountain, and have the option to sign up for chocolate making workshops. Tours start every hour and last about 60 minutes and reservations are not required.

Cathedrals

Visit the Saint Nicholas’ Cathedral or Franciscan Church of the Annunciation 300 year old baroque frescoes.

Day Trips

Ljubljana makes a great base for day trips, thanks to its central location and easy bus and train connections. Consider visiting Lake Bled, the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, Škocjan Caves, or head to the coast to visit Piran.
